"Truth is always stronger"
The plot of the current Wonder Woman is a direct sequel to the 2017 film. The main character is still an Amazon girl "molded from clay" with superpowers and a lasso of truth. Just in case, the introductory episode will definitely introduce both Diana herself and how she came to such a life.
After the events of the first film, about 70 years have passed - in the courtyard of 1984. Diana is still young, beautiful and on weekends she saves the world from small and large crooks. In between episodes of military glory, he works at the museum. Here she once meets a new employee - insecure Barbara Minerva. Both of them, though in different ways, suffer from loneliness. Friendship is formed between women.
At the same time, everywhere on TV screens, a millionaire appears, but in fact a rogue Maxwell Lord. The swindler promises everyone who invests in his dubious venture a beautiful life. In fact, a scoundrel builds an ordinary financial pyramid, splurges in the eyes, but he himself is a beggar, like a church rat, a loser. Only power, preferably absolute, can compensate for a sluggish ego.
And one day the Lord has a chance. In the museum where Diana and Barbara work, he notices an ancient artifact that fulfills every wish. It remains to seduce someone in order to get a stone and finally become the world's, first omnipotent man. Diana and Barbara will part ways. The first will understand the danger of the artifact and once again pompously declare that no real hero is born in a lie - she learned this lesson in childhood. The second will be flattered by promises and will remain with the Lord as a kind of security secretary.
Plot Wonder Woman 1984 is an extremely simple film. This is not a complaint, because most of the movie comics are just like that. And they go to watch them not for plot revelations, but for the sake of an understandable story, wrapped in a beautiful wrapper of special effects. There is nothing to say about common sense: before us is a movie about furry furries, a man with an unhealthy desire for power, and flying superheroes living for thousands of years. Therefore, all questions about the practical applicability of an airplane in an invisible bubble, instantly covering 10 thousand kilometers, should be left outside the room with the TV.
In fact, Wonder Woman 1984 had every chance of being a good family movie around Christmas. For some reason, the authors of the tape missed almost all these changes. It turned out the way it turned out.
Be afraid of your desires
But first, how did it happen. As in the first film, the atmosphere of the First World War was created, so this time the excellent thick atmosphere of the 1980s came out.
All these bright colors, slot machines, short men's shorts, eye-torn roller skates, jackets with shoulders, ubiquitous aerobics, brushed curls ... But at least take a look at the trailer, which is a hundred times more cheerful than the movie itself. And which, moreover, is great to set you up for a kind of nostalgic somersault in the 1980s a la "Back to the Future". Roughly half of the film meets these expectations and promises.
Not all is bad and with any semantic message of the film. The idea of "Fear your desires" is not new, but it cannot be called completely hackneyed and insipid, especially in comic blockbusters. And "Wonder Woman: 1984" as it can, with pathos ("The truth is most important! Deny your desires and save the world!") And under loud special effects carries this idea, for which she is generally thankful.
By the way, there are not many large-scale episodes, stuffed with visual effects, in fact, there are three: at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of the tape. But they are delivered well. Nothing outstanding, it does not break into a yawn, and that's good.
Actors ... There are no cleverly written roles, character development, and heavy inner transformation. That is, the heroic effort of acting skills is not required. That is why everything is standard and by high Hollywood standards: Gal Gadot is beautiful and noble in the role of Diana, Kristen Wiig is moderately convincing both in the form of an unprepossessing office mouse and in the form of a willed forbidden villainess. Pedro Pascal, aka Maxwell Lord, is only as good at his ambiguity as the writers let him.
There are questions for the rest.
Not a miracle
The authors of "Wonder Woman" for some reason decided that they could sit on two, or better on three chairs at once. After a set of beautiful scenes from the 1980s era, they remembered that they were actually making a comic. So, it's time to say goodbye to the naive children's atmosphere - welcome to the world of stamped movie comics. And let's add some political overtones. And, of course, a viciously laughing antagonist on the threshold of the end of the world.
This vinaigrette does not leave a sense of integrity. This is all the more surprising since the director had a full two and a half hours at his disposal! This is not an arthouse hassle, not a drama with a multifaceted disclosure of a dozen characters, or even the criminal adventures of a mafia with several storylines. For a blockbuster like Marvel comics, this lengthy timing is needed to tell a coherent story with a lot of boom and boom.
But not in the case of Wonder Woman, into which they tried to cram a story with a Christmas mood, and melodrama, and an instructive parable, and a political thriller, and a bunch of other things. Willy-nilly, you begin to fill in the gaps between scenes yourself - thinking that as a melodrama this picture is weak, like a thriller - boring, in the form of a parable - straightforward and edifying. Yes, and from the blockbuster remained horns and legs.
I am with all my hands for stories about strong women - even biographical, even comic. But if the cinema is weak, then no even the most urgent agenda will save it. Take the same Wonder Woman that appeared in 2017. This is not ideal, but a complete movie with its own history, harmonious mythology, and pleasant visuals. The continuation disintegrates into numerous irregularities on which it is glued.
Wonder Woman 1984 will only hit theaters next year and can be seen on TV now thanks to the HBO Max streaming service. The scheme is controversial, and it has caused a lot of criticism. I also think that such a spectacle will go better in a cinema than at home. But all the same, you can't get away from the hackneyed and crookedly sewn banal.
