Italy's data protection watchdog ordered social network TikTok on Friday to step up age restrictions on its application after the death of a minor, apparently for participating in one of the app's widespread challenges.

They emphasized that "the safety of the TikTok community is our top priority, and we are at the disposal of the relevant authorities to cooperate in their investigations."
In this regard, the Italian data protection authority asked TikTok to remove accounts that cannot immediately verify the user's age.
For his part, the mayor of Palermo, the city in which the minor girl lives, was "in a state of shock" and confirmed that a necessary discussion about young people's use of phones and social networks through a post on the social networking site Facebook.
