A mysterious new form of cybercrime baffles experts. It involves stealing money from the rich and then donating it to charity.
The Darkside Pirates, as they call themselves, claim to have stolen millions of dollars from companies in the past, and say they now want to "make the world a better place".In a post on the Dark Web, the thieving hackers showed receipts of $ 10,000 in Bitcoin donations to two charities.
In a post, hackers claimed that they only target large companies that are profitable with ransomware attacks.
These attacks hold corporate and corporate computer systems hostage until a ransom is paid.
“We believe it is fair that a portion of the money that companies earn goes to charity,” the hackers wrote.
"No matter how bad you think our job is, we are happy to know that we are helping to change someone's life. Today we send out the first donations," they continued.
Cyber criminals posted the donation along with the tax receipts they received for the 0.88 bitcoins they sent to two charities: The Water Project and Children International.
A spokesperson for Children International told the BBC: "If the donation is linked to piracy, we have no intention of keeping it."
The water project, which works to improve access to safe drinking water in sub-Saharan Africa, did not respond to requests for comment.
