If you have ever wondered about the secret to naming Xiaomi, today you will get an answer from the founder of the company.
Lei Jun, co-founder and current CEO of China Electronics and Internet Services, wanted to clarify one of the most widespread doubts about the company, while presenting a review of the brand's origins and taking advantage of the move to reveal some of Xiaomi's best-kept secrets.
This is not the first time that we hear how the name Xiaomi refers to the Chinese word for millet or rice. But the truth is, there is a lot behind this name.Lei Jun himself has more than once linked the "Xiao" part of the brand name to a Buddhist notion that "one grain of rice is a Buddhist the size of a mountain."
Under this popular saying, Xiaomi points to its philosophy of working from the small things to getting to something much bigger. In fact, many members of the company's board of directors decided to use this name as soon as someone suggested it, stating that "the Internet is by nature far fetched. We will not take the big but the small. Let's call it Xiaomi."
As for the "Mi" part in the name, it is certainly not philosophical or funny, as it is an acronym for "Mobile Internet", the two areas that the company aspires to conquer through its products and services.
This is just one of the many curiosities around the name of Xiaomi that not many people know about it, not even its most loyal fans. "Xiao" indicates that "one grain of rice is the size of a mountain." Ie work from the small things to reach something much bigger, and Mi, as we said, is an acronym for "Mobile Internet".
