Muslim Pro subscribers filed a lawsuit after media reports accused the divorce of selling their data to the US military. French radio station RTL accuses the company of violating data protection and trust, endangering users and conspiring to commit murders.
Their attorneys said on Monday that French users of an Islamic prayer app that sells data that ends up in the hands of the US military have decided to file a lawsuit against the company that developed it.The lawsuit comes after a report issued by the "Vice" media group last week about how the US military purchased geo-app users' location data and a series of apps around the world.
These applications include the Muslim Pro application, which uses the geolocation feature on smartphones to enable users to set prayer times and the direction of the Qiblah.
The company sold this data to another company called "X-Mode," which in turn sold it to contractors, eventually to the US Army.
The US Special Forces could then use the data for overseas missions, according to the report, which means it opens the way for extrajudicial executions of terror suspects using drones.
The day after the report was released, Muslim Pro announced that it would suspend its data sharing with other companies. The company, founded by a Frenchman who lives in Singapore, said it had opened an internal investigation.
