The Russian government has introduced a bill seeking to grant powers to the executive that would allow it to block the technological giants of social networks. This is part of the Kremlin's strategy to increase control over the activities of its citizens and foreign companies operating in the country, especially those operating in the technological sphere.
Russia has long since begun to fully control the digital ecosystem used by its citizens, and is even trying to build its own Internet networks so that it is not dependent on foreign network providers and operators. One of the central points of this strategy is to monitor the main communication and information channels used by the population, which are social media networks.According to Reuters, to achieve this, the country's government has just announced a bill under which it intends to grant and ban social media networks, which are the most widespread around the world. In doing so, they explain, they want to end the discrimination against the Russian media.
For many, this decision in Russia may mean isolating themselves from the rest of the world, but the intention of the Russian CEO is to have absolute control over what happens in the data networks operating in the country, and to avoid unwanted interference from outside. Likewise, many voices have been raised to warn that this would violate the privacy of Russian citizens and companies, allowing the government to exert total control over the country's digital ecosystem.
Whatever the case, Russia is determined. According to the statement issued by the executive authority to deliver this law, "The urgency in adopting this law is due to many cases of unjustified restrictions on Russian citizens' access to information in the Russian media by some Internet resources, including those registered outside Russia."
Although, before it becomes a final law, the bill must be approved by the lower house of parliament, and then, by the Senate, then signed by the president. If successful, the state communications regulator may block foreign social networks in whole or in part.
